2011 Goals

The past 2 years, I have set goals at the beginning of the year. I have been brainstorming the past several weeks about what goals I would like to set for myself. I have had both successful and not-so-successful goals, so I hope that this knowledge will help me create some for this year that will challenge me and be easily trackable to keep me accountable. My plan is to have post monthly updates to track my progress.

1. I want to try to reach my lowest adult weight (9 pounds to lose) and see if I can even get to my weight when I was 16 (14 pounds to lose).

Rationale: I have felt incredibly healthy since I started working on losing weight in April 2009. At my highest adult weight, I weighed a whopping 46 pounds more than I do now. I don't want to put that back on, and I want to challenge myself to see if I'm capable if getting down to my lowest adult weight.

Plan of Action: I was a bit indulgent the past month (especially with sweets), so I know that once I get my diet back on track, I should be able to shed some more weight. I always lost the most weight when I counted calories, so I plan to do that again. I've purchased a few fun notebooks over the past few months for this purpose. I'll also cook more at home from my Weight Watchers cookbooks, and will rev up my exercising beginning this week. Each month, I will make mini-goals to make this larger goal more attainable and to give me specific focus.

Mini-Goals for January:
1. I use resources on SparkPeople to help me determine healthy weight loss goals, calorie totals, etc. (though I prefer to count calories by writing them down using a fun notebook and pen!). Using this site, and inputting my goal of losing 14 pounds this year, it says I should consume between 1710 - 2060 calories a day. I will aim for an intake of 1885 calories each day.

2. I use Hacker's Diet to track my weight on a daily basis. It eliminates the frustrating fluctuations in water weight from day to day and creates a running average of your weight. This tool has been incredibly helpful for me, as I hate the thought of weighing in and impacting my trendline if I decide to indulge. I am aiming for a modest goal of losing 1 pound this month.

3. I will increase my physical activity this month by doing the following:

  • participating in the 10,000 steps program at my work (and to get the health insurance incentive!)

  • creating a weekly fitness plan during my lunch breaks (alternating between walking on the treadmill, weight lifting, and back strengthening exercises)

  • using our new recumbent bike in the apartment 30 minutes each day (easily done by watching a TV episode or reading a book!)

  • beginning zumba classes with my friends mid-month

  • signing up for another fitness class through St. Paul Community Education

4. I will go out to eat only 1-2 times each week.

2. I want to continue reading regularly, and want to increase my reading goal to 36 books this year (3/month rather than the 2.5 this year).

Rationale: I have found incredible satisfaction and relaxation in reading for pleasure the past two years I've set book goals. I absolutely love going to the library (checking out books gives me the same feeling as purchasing them), and want to continue devoting time to reading for fun.

Plan of Action: I will continue tracking my books on Goodreads and try to recruit others to join so I can keep track of what friends and family are reading! Fine me on the site if you decide to join!

Mini-Goals for January:
1. I am halfway through 3 books. I will finish those books before starting others.

2. I will work to establish a monthly book club, with participants agreeing to host at least one monthly meeting, which includes selecting the book for the group to read. Let me know if you're interested!

3. Continuing my love of travel, I want to take 2 major trips this year, preferably to places I haven't been to yet.

Rationale: I love seeing new sights and trying new foods, so this is always a yearly goal of mine!

Plan of Action: Matt and I plan to go to England this summer or fall. Later this year, I will start making plans for that trip and brainstorming another trip to take sometime this year.

4. I want to get savvier with simple technology tasks, including cleaning up currently technology (e.g. laptop files, iPod).

Rationale: There are some simple things that I'm not so good at still. I want to devote time to getting better at things so I don't have to ask Matt silly questions!

Plan of Action: A vague goal as it is listed above makes it hard for me to work toward. Therefore, I will set mini-goals, complete them, and then set new goals so I'm consistently organizing and learning new things. This goal will also be worked toward in additional goals listed below.

Mini-Goal for January:
1. I will learn how to back up my hard drive.

5. I want to write more, and will make a goal to write at least twice/week in my LiveJournal (LJ).

Rationale: I've always enjoyed writing, and I want to make a conscious effort to do so more often.

Plan of Action: Whenever I have an idea of a journal entry to write, I will jot it down in a special notebook where I'll keep journal entry ideas. If I still struggle with writing ideas, I will consult some writing idea books on my bookshelf or the daily writing prompts on the LJ main page.

Mini-Goals for January:
1. I will devote at least one of my 30-minute recumbent bike rides each week to writing an LJ entry to help me achieve this goal.

2. I will publicly post at least one entry each week to Facebook to expand my audience and encourage myself to write.

3. I will make a total of 4 new LJ icons this month (one a week), getting help from Matt to not compromise the quality of the pictures I select as I shrink them to size! This will help make writing in my LJ more fun!

6. I want to reduce my possessions.

Rationale: I don't like a lot of clutter in our apartment, which is how it is now. However, I have CDs and DS games I don't physically need, DVDs I don't watch regularly anymore, and books I only plan to read once. Therefore, I will work to whittle down my possessions on a monthly basis.

Plan of Action: In addition to preparing items to sell for some cash, I will also not purchase any new or used CDs, DVDs, DS games, or books this year. I'll also assess my current possessions and determine what I still want to keep.

Mini-Goals for January:
1. I will upload 10 CDs to my hard drive each week and prepare to sell them at Cheapo two times a month.

2. I will rewatch 3 movies currently in my collection and determine whether to keep or sell them at Cheapo.

7. I want to be married to Matt by the end of 2011.

Rationale: I'm getting a little tired of having no updates for friends and family who ask about our wedding plans. It seems like we're not the only ones eager to celebrate out decision to spend our lives together!

Plan of Action: Now that my job situation is happily resolved, I want to devote time to finding a venue for our celebration, which will in turn set the other plans in motion.

Mini-Goal for January:
1. Matt and I will divide up our list of venues to research, narrow them down to viable candidates, and schedule tours.

Wow, Very impressive. I don't think I could be that organized if I tried. However, I do want to lose more weight, and would love to see some of the recipes you like. Just reading your LJ posts will be motivation for me.

I'm sure I can find many of the recipes I like online so I don't have to type them up. I'll be sure to let you know when I find ones we particularly like. :)

I admittedly really like setting goals and feeling accomplished; it keeps me happy. Therefore, I figured I'd keep the trend going to be happy in 2011! :)

(P.S. Is this a new LJ name I should be following?)
