2010 Reflections

I like doing this little reflection every year!

1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
I went skydiving, which was a ton of fun. I also tried zumba for the first time (and found out I loved it), and trained for a 10K race (despite being disappointed by getting lost on the course and not getting an accurate completion time).

2. Did you keep your New Years resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I kept a majority of the resolutions/goals I set in 2010, and plan to set my 2011 goals later this afternoon!

3. Did someone close to you give birth?
My friend Theresa gave birth to her second child, Jameson, in November. My friend Angie gave birth to her first child, Kaylee, just a few days ago!

4. Did anyone close to you die?
I put my beloved kitty Cocoa to sleep in February.

5. What countries did you visit?
I did not leave the country in 2010.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
I would like to have more defined abdominal muscles, so I'm looking forward to exercising on a regular basis to make this happen! :)

7. What dates from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
February 15, 2010 -- I put my 17 1/2 year old kitty Cocoa to sleep.
June 7, 2010 -- Matt and I got engaged!
August 3, 2010 -- I went skydiving for the first time with Alyssa.
August 6, 2010 -- I quit my job at Hamline University.
November 7, 2010 -- I started my new job at St. Catherine University.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I felt the fear and did it anyway -- I quit my job in an alleged bad economy without another job lined up. During the three months between jobs, I went on 8 interviews, had 2 job offers, and substitute taught for a few weeks. I was proud of myself for taking charge and removing myself from an unhappy situation and profiting as a result.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I didn't really feel like a failure this year. I guess the only thing I can think of is that over the span of 3 days of Wheelmobile events (2 days in Fargo, one in Hinckley), I didn't get called to be on stage to audition for Wheel of Fortune. :)

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nope. I continue to be fortunate to be in wonderful health.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I bought a ton of adorable new clothes since I shrunk out of many of my old ones!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I'm proud of my friend Alyssa for taking charge of things in her life and taking better care of herself as a result.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Anyone who doesn't believe in equal rights for those in the GLBT community bother me tremendously.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Beyond basic living expenses, I enjoyed spending money on my travels, my new wardrobe, and going out to eat.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I was pretty happy getting engaged to my handsome beau and best friend. :)

16. What song will always remind you of 2010?
"Bring on the Wonder" by Susan Egan

17. Compared to this time last year, are you

i. happier or hardened?
I'm definitely happier!

ii. thinner or fatter?
Thinner -- I lost another 12.7 pounds in 2010!

iii. richer or poorer?
I'm a bit poorer since I dipped into my savings while I was job searching. However, I'm already working aggressively at building it back up to where it was before!

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I wish I had done a bit more exercising and cooking once the snow fell. Curse the hibernation tendencies! Also, I always wish I traveled more than I do.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
I wish I had spent less time trying to figure out the mysteries of Lost. I didn't get the resolution I was hoping for in the series finale.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Here's how I spent Christmas this year. Matt dubbed it our "Christmas Marathon"!
December 24, 2010-- Hultman extended family gathering / Mayfield immediate family gathering
December 25, 2010 -- Peters extended family gathering
December 26-27, 2010 -- Family gathering with Dad, Lauri, and Sarah
January 1-2, 2011 -- Snyder extended family gathering (Matt's extended family)
January 9, 2011 -- Family gathering with Mom

21. Did you fall in love in 2010?
Nope! I was too busy loving Matt to look for a new love!

22. Any one-night stands?

23. What was your favorite TV program?
My favorite new discovery this year was Bones. Thanks for the recommendation, Ashley!

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No, I don't really hate anyone. Dislike, yes, but hate, not so much.

25. What was the best book you read?
It was probably The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The three new artists I've listened to the most in 2010 are Cascada (great running music), Serena Ryder (one of the best opening acts I've ever seen -- she opened for BNL in May), and Susan Egan (Sarah McLachlan-esque).

27. What did you want and get?
I wanted a new job and got it!

28. What did you want and not get?
I would have liked to have lost a bit more weight, but I am not disappointed with what I did lose!

29. Favorite film of this year?
I seem to spend most of my time watching TV on DVD or through Netflix Instantly. I started going to the movie theater again since Thanksgiving, and my favorite was probably Tangled.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 29 this year. We were on our west coast road trip, and that was a big travel day from Portland, OR, to Utah. We stopped for pizza since I was craving that for my birthday meal. :)

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
I'm grateful that I had a very satisfying year. Maybe having less snow during December? :)

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
I have become more fashionably confident this year as a result of losing weight. I've been picking out clothes that are not only flattering, but get me compliments! It'll be fun to update my spring/summer wardrobe in a few months!

33. What kept you sane?
Matt, without a doubt. He was very encouraging when I quit my job and worked hard on over 100 job applications. I'm glad to have such a wonderful cheerleader!

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Hmm, I haven't really oogled over many celebrities this year. However, I can say that David Boreanaz from Bones has one hell of a sexy smile. :)

35. What political issue stirred you the most?
Anything trying to prevent gay marriage or gays in the military frustrated me. I kept my typical tradition of avoiding politics whenever possible.

36. Who do you miss?
It's always my sister. I miss spending time with her, and I wished we lived closer so I could see my niece more often and help give her a break when she needs it.

37. Who was the best new person you met?
I got to know Alex at Hamline before I left, and we still keep in touch. I am envious of her clever personality and love her Facebook status updates. :)

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:
You are in charge of your own destiny. Whenever I've started taking charge of something I'm not happy with, I always end up better as a result (e.g. weight loss, new job).

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"I am woman, hear me roar / In numbers too big to ignore / And I know too much to go back an' pretend / 'cause I've heard it all before / And I've been down there on the floor / No one's ever gonna keep me down again" -- Helen Reddy, "I Am Woman"
